Rheinzink - Zinc
The Material RHEINZINK
RHEINZINK is a trade name for titanium zinc, manufactured to DIN EN 988. Electrolytically refined zinc with a 99.995% degree of purity as defined by DIN EN 1179 serves as the basis for the alloy, which also includes small yet precise amounts of copper and titanium. The composition of the alloy is one of the factors determining the technological properties of the material – as well as the colour of the RHEINZINK patina.
The raw material is melted, cast and wound onto a steel sleeve in a single continuous operation. The quality of this material is uniform and flawless. These coils are then used for further processing as a universal source material to produce RHEINZINK's high-quality roof drainage programme, pre-fabricated parts for roofing applications and facade cladding including the necessary building profiles.
RHEINZINK is available in four different Product Lines: RHEINZINK-PATINA, -PROTECT, -COLOR and -INTERIEUR.

QUALITY ZINC
The outstanding quality of RHEINZINK products in terms of materials and manufacture can be attributed to our many years of experience combined with a constant willingness to innovate. A uniform quality standard is ensured by our patented wide-strip casting and rolling mill, continuous monitoring of each stage of production, all mechanical and technological properties listed above as well as the dimensional tolerances of the material.
All RHEINZINK products are certified to DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 and submitted for voluntary inspection by TÜV Rheinland according to the stringent requirements of the QUALITY ZINC Criteria Catalogue. This recognised German certification company has developed its own quality label for zinc as a building material. A catalogue of quality criteria lists all characteristic data for the material and permitted tolerances for the quality of the semi-finished product (coils and sheets). Monitoring is carried out every two months by an inspector from TÜV Rheinland, who arrives at the plant unannounced.
Inspection focuses on the quality characteristics going beyond the requirements of the standard, e.g. reduced deviation in the permitted thickness of only ±0.020 mm, reduced length / width tolerances of +2.0/-0 mm and increased proof stress (Rp 0.2).
Environmentally conscious handling is documented through the adoption of ISO 14001:2004, the Environmental Management System, tested and certified by the TÜV Rheinland. Finally our environmental consciousness is also proved by the implementation of our energy management system according to DIN EN 16001. We are fully committed to save energy and resources thus minimalizing our products’ effects on environment.
Product Declarations
Regulations governing building products / CE marking
The products manufactured by RHEINZINK according to harmonised standards always comply with the requirements of the building products regulations for the CE marking of products used for construction.
We automatically supply customers with a declaration of performance and CE mark on delivery of the relevant product. This forms part of the shipping documents. Should you also be interested in receiving these documents electronically, please get in touch with us.
In the case of semi-finished products / sheets / coils (DIN EN 988) and our roof drainage programme (DIN EN 612), CE marking is not possible according to the building products regulations as these standards are not harmonised. This however has no influence on product quality: All products manufactured by ourselves satisfy the relevant product standard. In addition, our semi-finished products are subject to the stringent QUALITY ZINC criteria, which are monitored by TÜV Rheinland.
REACH Regulation EC/1907/2006
In Europe all substances manufactured in a volume > 1 t/year must be registered according to the REACH Regulation EC/1907/2006. Furthermore, Art. 33 of the regulation states that manufacturers of products containing so-called substances of very high concern (SVHC) as defined by Art. 57 ff. / Annex XIV of the regulation in a concentration > 0.1% are obliged to notify customers accordingly and to supply them with information about the safe use of such products.
For RHEINZINK products this means:
RHEINZINK products are not subject to the obligation of registration under this regulation as they are not substances but products.
Our suppliers of raw materials have already preregistered their substances covered by the REACH Regulation and will carry out registration by the deadline.
As RHEINZINK products do not contain SVHC in concentrations > 0.1%, they do not need to be registered.
Environmental Product Declaration according to ISO 14025 Type III and EN 15804
The certification of buildings according to sustainability criteria is becoming increasingly important. Verified product data from product-specific declarations or general databases are used by different certification systems such as DGNB, LEED or BREEAM to assess the environmental performance of buildings. In this context we rely on transparency and real data and therefor possess Environmental Product Declarations in accordance with ISO 14025 Type III and EN 15804 for our Product Lines PATINA LINE, PROTECT LINE und INTERIEUR LINE.

KME - Copper
Copper is a completely recyclable raw material and is therefore a RENEWABLE RESOURCE for our future.
The durability or rather the practical indestructibility of copper allows it to becompletely recycled when its products are no longer of use, with no loss of performance.
When copper products are no longer of use, the metal contained within perfectly maintains its physical-chemical properties and can therefore be completely recycled to become a new resource, with great advantages in terms of saving the world's natural resources.
It is estimated that approximately 80% of all the copper that has ever been mined, after being remelted and reworked numerous times, is still in use today, with clear advantages in terms of non aggressive use of the potentially available mineral resources.
To stress the importance of the reuse of copper, keep in mind that:
Copper is a 100% recyclable metal.
The excellent organization that is currently in place for the recycling of copper products (with a capillary network of recycling centres), combined with the high value of the recycled material, contributes to the success of the recovery and reuse of copper, which is one of the most recycled metals.
In Europe, the percentage of copper that is recovered from the various products when they are no longer of use and are reintroduced into the production process is equal to approximately 70% of the total amount that is potentially available.
Recycled copper has the same physical-chemical and technological properties as the primary material
its uses are not limited, its value does not decrease and it does not have to undergo any treatment before being reused.
50% of the entire European production of semi-finished copper products comes from recycled material:
Copper scrap is a fundamental component in the production of semi-finished copper products: Excluding the wire rod, on average its weight in the production of the various semi-finished copper products is comparable to that of the raw material (cathodes), which is approximately 50%. In some sectors, such as brass rod, it is even higher and can reach 80-90% of the total of the raw material used.
Scrap is an energy bank:
Recycling copper means saving 85% of the energy needed to produce the primary metal (source: Bureau of International Recycling)
Recycling helps the environment, in that it also reduces
emissions related to the mining and smelting of primary copper
the volume of solid waste and the costs and problems related to its disposal
Scrap is the true European "copper mine"
that can reduce our industry's dependence on the importation of raw material. Millions of tons of copper are found in the products that we use every day; when these products are no longer useful, the metals contained within are recycled and become new resources, available for our future.
Recycled scrap
coming not from the recovery of metal in "worn-out" goods, but from work residue/remnants of the industries that use the semi-finished products represents a strong synergic relationship between the production of semi-finished products and the industries that use them, making the entire system more competitive.
